This DIY waffle stitch crochet potholder is modern, stylish and really fun to make. The leather handle comes from a reused belt.
Waffle stitches make the potholder a bit thicker and sturdier, which is great when handling hot pans and baking trays. Pattern and step by step tutorial further down in this blog post.
But first an important message to English speaking blog readers: Make sure you update your subscription on Hungry Heart’s Bloglovin’ feed to the new, English version! If you keep following my old Bloglovin’ account, you’ll from now on only see posts in Swedish. Here’s my Bloglovin’ account in ENGLISH.
The waffle stitch is rather easy, so you don’t have to be a crochet pro to make these potholders. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll notice that this is actually a pretty quick (and fun!) project.
Here’s how to make a waffle stitch crochet potholder:

Supplies:
Yarn (about half a skein for two potholders), crochet hook that matches the yarn in size (I used US size 7), scissors or knife, leather or fake leather belt, revolving hole punch, two rivets.
You need to know how to do this before you start:

How to:
Waffle stitch crochet pattern
Row 1: Make a slipknot and chain 28.
Row 2: Double crochet in the 2nd chain from hook and in each stitch across. Chain 1. Turn.
Row 3: Double crochet in the 2nd chain from hook. Make 1 front post double crochet (Wrap yarn over hook, insert hook to the right of the post, between the stitches, around the back and through the opposite side between the stitches on the left side of the post (see red arrow on step by step picture!). Wrap the yarn over, pull it through, complete the double crochet). * 1 double crochet into each of the next 2 stitches, 1 front post double crochet around the next stitch ** Repeat from * to ** until end of the row. 1 double crochet in turning chain. Chain 1. Turn.
Row 4: Double crochet in 2nd and 3rd chain from hook. * 2 front post double crochet, 1 double crochet ** Repeat from * to ** until end of the row. 1 double crochet in turning chain. Chain 1. Turn.
Rows 5-17: Repeat rows 3-4.
Fasten the yarn.
If you’d rather see a video tutorial I recommend this one with Bella Coco. I’ve followed her instructions in this pattern, but I don’t finish of with a row of double crochet.
Assembling:
- Cut a strip of leather belt for handle.
- Punch a hole at each end of the leather strip.
- Insert a rivet to a corner of the potholder.
- Overlap the holes of the leather strip and attach to the rivet.
- Attach the rivet cap. Use a hammer to shut the rivet completely.
